Canvey nightclub Club CK to become church

A FORMER nightclub will be converted into a place for worship for a Christian group.

Plans have been agreed for the works by Redeemed Christian Church Of God Fruitful Tabernacle at the former Club CK, Eastern Esplanade, Canvey.

It will take over the first floor of the building where the nightclub operated.

It will be used from 9am until 3pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

It is thought the group will use it as a community space for events as well as a space for worship.

It has been met by mixed reaction from councillors.

Ray Howard, veteran Tory councillor said everyone is entitled to have a faith.
He said: “Obviously these people feel the group is growing and have found a premises that is a bit more secure as they have used public spaces in the past.

“I wish them well.”

Barry Palmer, Canvey Independent councillor said they have used a few island

community centres.

He said “They were based over at the centre at near King George Playing Field, off Blackthorne Road on Canvey.

“They can be quite noisy when they hold these events and have lots of music and activity.

“There is a place in society for groups such as this one.”

Edward Parkin, one of the landlords, said they were pleased with the progress.

Mr Parkin added: “We are pleased to finally be moving away form the nightclub scene. The majority of the nightclub floor space will be changed to a dance studio, that has also been approved.

“The remaining function room area is what will be changed to ‘place of worship’.

“We can assure neighbours noise will not be an issue for them and that we will take any necessary measures to ensure that.”
